At Townehaus, we are a husband-and-wife family business based in Moorestown, New Jersey. We design and sell American-made solid wood furniture, and we take genuine pride in the level of service we provide. We personally attend every delivery. We help clients choose the right wood, the right finish, and the right scale for their home. We stay involved long after the pieces are in place.
Our focus is deliberate. We primarily serve clients in South Jersey, the Philadelphia area and its surrounding suburbs, and the New Jersey Shore. That geographic concentration allows us to maintain the high standard of personal service that defines how we work.
High-quality solid wood furniture is not a commodity. It is something that should last decades — ideally generations. The process of selecting it, ordering it, and living with it benefits enormously from a real relationship with the people who sell it.
Unfortunately, not every inquiry reflects that mindset.
A Familiar Pattern
We recently received an email from a prospective buyer who was ready to purchase a specific dining set — a 42×72 table along with four matching chairs and three bar stools. The message noted that another dealer was already below $5,000, asked for our absolute best delivered price to a city nearly 900 miles away, and stated that the purchase would be made as soon as the lowest price was quoted from a verified online retailer. Contact was requested by email or text only.
This type of inquiry is more common than many people realize. On the surface it looks like a straightforward sales opportunity. In reality, these tend to be the most difficult and least rewarding transactions in the furniture business.
Here’s why:
- The margin is often paper-thin. When a customer is already hundreds of dollars below a realistic wholesale-plus-delivery number, there is simply not enough room left for the kind of service we provide. At that point you are no longer selling furniture — you are competing on who is willing to absorb the most risk and overhead.
- The relationship never develops. These buyers usually do not want guidance, recommendations, or conversation. They want a number. Once the number is provided, the interaction ends. There is no trust built, no understanding of how the pieces will actually live in the home, and no ongoing relationship.
- Problems become one-sided. If something arrives damaged, if a finish is slightly off, or if the customer later decides the scale is wrong, the expectation is still that the lowest-priced seller will fix it — even though the price left no room for that level of support.
- Distance multiplies the difficulty. We deliberately focus on clients we can serve well — those in South Jersey, greater Philadelphia, the surrounding suburbs, and the New Jersey Shore. When a delivery is nearly 900 miles away and we cannot be present, the entire service model we have built collapses.
There is a significant difference between a standard curbside drop-off and a professional setup where we personally attend the delivery, make sure every piece is properly placed, check the fit and finish in the actual room, and address any issues on the spot. That level of care is simply not possible at that distance. What remains is a pure transaction, and pure transactions are not what we are structured to do well.
If the description above sounds like the way you prefer to buy furniture, we respectfully suggest looking elsewhere. We are not the right fit for pure price-shopping, long-distance, lowest-quote-wins transactions. That is not a judgment — it is simply a recognition of how we choose to run our business.
What We Choose Instead
We would rather work with fewer clients who value the full experience:
- People who want to understand the difference between red oak and white oak
- People who care how a finish will age in their particular light
- People who appreciate that someone will actually be there when the truck arrives
- People who see furniture as an investment rather than a temporary purchase
Those relationships are more rewarding for us, and they almost always produce better long-term results for the client. Because we stay focused on South Jersey, the Philadelphia region, and the Jersey Shore, we can show up in person, solve problems quickly, and stand behind every piece we sell.
A Simple Truth
Furniture priced purely on the lowest number is rarely the best furniture experience. The difference between a good purchase and a frustrating one is usually not the few hundred dollars that separate two quotes. It is whether anyone on the selling side still has the capacity (and the incentive) to stand behind the product once the check has cleared.
We choose to keep that capacity. That means we sometimes decline inquiries that are focused only on beating someone else’s price. It is not personal. It is simply a decision about the kind of business we want to run and the kind of clients we can serve at the standard we set for ourselves.
If you are looking for solid wood furniture made in America and you value a genuine relationship with the people who sell it — especially if you are in South Jersey, the Philadelphia area, or along the New Jersey Shore — we would be glad to talk. If the only question that matters is who can go lowest, we are probably not the right fit — and that is okay.
We would rather do fewer things the right way than chase every possible order.
